Test Drive Checklist

A test drive is more than just a quick spin around the block. It is your only chance to verify that a vehicle actually fits your body, your tech, and your driving environment. Use this checklist to stay objective and spot potential “deal-breakers” before you sign the paperwork.

Category What to Check Why it Matters
The Cold Start Ask the dealer to ensure the engine is “cold” when you arrive. Listen for rattles, squeals, or smoke. Many engine and belt issues are hidden once the car has been warmed up by a previous driver.
The Tech Audit Bring your charging cable. Connect your phone and test CarPlay/Android Auto immediately. Glitchy infotainment is the #1 owner complaint. If it’s slow now, it will be infuriating in three years.
Visibility & Blind Spots Check your over-the-shoulder views. Can you see the curb when reversing? Sleek exterior designs often create massive blind spots that make daily lane changes stressful.
The “Golf Bag” Test Bring your most common bulky item (golf clubs, stroller, gear). Actually put it in the trunk. Spec sheets lie about “Cargo Volume.” Useable floor space and the height of the liftgate matter more.
Climate Control Crank the A/C to max. Check for rear-seat vents. Some “efficient” cars have weak compressors that can’t keep up with very hot summer days.
The Parking Test Take the car to a tight parking lot. Try a U-turn and a reverse-park. You need to know the turning radius and how the steering feels at low speeds before you’re in a crowded garage.
Braking Feel Do a firm (but safe) stop. Does the car pull to one side? Do the brakes “pulsate”? Pulsating usually means warped rotors—an immediate maintenance cost you should negotiate.
Ergonomics Adjust the seat and wheel. Can you reach all buttons without leaning forward? If you can’t get perfectly comfortable in 10 minutes, you’ll have back pain on a 2-hour road trip.

Pro Tip: The “Radio Off” Rule

Keep the music off for at least the first 10 minutes of the drive. You need to hear the wind noise, tire roar, and transmission shifts. If the salesperson is talking too much, politely ask for a moment of silence to “listen to the car.”
